Student Nurse Volunteer Trip Ecuador, May 2011: April 12, 2011

I received my assigned hospital today: Hospital Pablo Arturo Suárez in the north of the city.
And my homestay will be with 3 other volunteers.

Nursing student on a medical mission

In looking for a meaningful way to spend my summer break, I signed up to volunteer in South America. From May 16th- May 26th I will be working with Fundacion Bolivar Educacion, a well-respected non-profit based locally in Ecuador. I will be volunteering in a community hospital in Northern Quito, working alongside doctors to provide medical care. The expenses for volunteering include: registration fee $25, program fees $250, homestay and meals $16/day. I'll also be donating $150 to purchase medical supplies for the hospital. I have a strong heart for service and am excited to use the nursing skills I've gained to make a difference serving the poor. Outside of the volunteer program, I will be exploring the cities of Ecuador and the Amazon. I look forward to gaining a cultural experience that will broaden my perspective, reinforce my skills, and give me opportunity to provide humanitarian aid in an area where medical care is lacking. I am paying for the trip myself, but am also raising money to pay for some of the fees that make this volunteer program possible.
